Freeport is a small working fishing village nestled between the rugged shores of the Bay of Fundy and the St. Mary’s Bay on Long Island in Digby County, Nova Scotia. Long Island is accessible year-round via a ferry service which is operated by the provincial government. The ferry departs the mainland on the half-hour, 24-hours a day.
Freeport is a quaint Nova Scotian village, boasting a well stocked general store and café, a PP to Grade 12 public school, Medical / EHS Centre, Volunteer Fire Department, Community Hall, community greenhouse and gardens, baseball field, trails, art galleries, a museum and various types of accommodations. In the 2021 Census of Population conducted by Statistics Canada, Freeport had a population of 217 permanent residents.
The shoreline is rocky and offers breath taking views of the Bay of Fundy and the St. Mary’s Bay. Seabirds and eagles, seals and other sea life can often be seen and if you are lucky whales can also be seen and heard, during the summer months, right from the shore.
Freeport has a great deal to offer visitors. Recreational activities such as whale / bird watching, beach combing, walk/play on the ocean floor at low tide in Northeast Cove, hike the trails and shoreline where you can discover unique flora and fauna or enjoy a relaxing evening on the shore watching the sun set over the Bay of Fundy. Cultural activities such as visiting the Islands Museum and Archives, browse the art galleries, or attend one of the annual festivals/events here on the islands, Digby Neck or in the Town of Digby.
